Why does my nose ring smell bad?

I've had my nose pierced for about a year and a half, and whenever I move or twist the jewelry I have in, I get a faint whiff of something that smells bad. It's pretty much happened with any of the jewelry I've worn in my nose, and I've never had any infections in the piercing. What is it that smells weird???
