Sugar water for fruit flies?

I put out a bowl of sugar water (sugar and water mixed together, obviously) and I have like 20 fruit flies in my room, gross! Do you think they would get a whiff and be attracted to it? So far I have only seen one go over to it, but it was smart enough to stay away from the actual water. Any thing I can do that won't cost money, and that I can do real quick?
